Oct. 21 (CandyPulse) — Wall Street's tokenization boom just hit a wall of objections. Microsoft, Alphabet and Goldman Sachs are among 16 companies that have objected to tokenized versions of their shares trading on OKXICE, the planned 24/7 venue from OKX and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE).
Key takeaways
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is OKXICE? | A planned venue from OKX and ICE for tokenized U.S. stocks |
| What did the companies do? | Filed written objections under the SEC's Innovation Exemption |
| Effect | OKXICE can't offer those third-party tokenized shares under the exemption |
| Does it stop normal stock trading? | No |
| Does it ban all tokenization? | No; issuer-authorized tokens and other venues aren't automatically blocked |
| Did they explain why? | No |
The updated notice also shows a shift. Earlier, OKXICE said third parties would tokenize the shares. Now it says it will offer stocks tokenized either by an outside party or by the companies themselves. That could give issuers a way to take part on their own terms.
Tokenized stocks promise round-the-clock trading and faster settlement, but the biggest companies clearly want a say in how their shares appear on blockchains. Some observers see a difference between companies building tokenization tools themselves and letting an outside venue tokenize their stock. Others caution that the filing doesn't show these firms oppose blockchain-based securities in general.
