Oct. 21 (CandyPulse) — Trading crypto is no longer enough for crypto exchanges. The next revenue race is prediction markets, where people trade YES or NO on real-world events. Blockchain.com has applied to U.S. regulators to join in, and Binance.US has said it plans its own bid.
Key takeaways
| Company | What it wants | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Blockchain.com | DCM and FCM licenses for event contracts and crypto derivatives | Filed; awaiting CFTC decision |
| Binance.US | DCM status for futures, options and event contracts | Announced plan in July; filing not confirmed publicly |
| Crypto.com, Gemini | Event-contract markets | Already operating |
| Coinbase | Event contracts via a Kalshi partnership | Live |
Blockchain.com already offers prediction markets and perpetual futures, but only to non-U.S. customers. The licenses would let it bring them home.
Prediction markets let people trade on outcomes such as elections, sports, economic data and even TV shows. For exchanges, they bring new users, daily activity and trading fees that don't depend on whether Bitcoin is up or down.
Binance.US, which lost market share after the SEC sued it in 2023, sees it as part of a wider push beyond spot trading into derivatives and perpetual futures.
The sector is growing fast, but it's also under scrutiny. We've covered new CFTC rules for prediction markets heading to White House review, New York's court fight with Polymarket and Kalshi ending its volume rewards amid wash-trading claims.
Prediction markets are part of the CANDY roadmap too. CandyBet is planned to let people trade YES or NO on real-world outcomes using CANDY. It's marked coming soon. Read RWA, DeFi and prediction markets in plain English.
Watch for the CFTC's decision on Blockchain.com and confirmation that Binance.US has filed. Neither company has given a U.S. launch date. Browse more on our Bitcoin, Regulation and Tokenization topic pages, or catch up with crypto news today.
