Oct. 21 (CandyPulse) — What if you could own Bitcoin's upside with a safety net underneath? That's the pitch behind BlackRock's newest filing. The world's largest asset manager has filed with the SEC for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, ticker PBIT, a "buffer" fund that limits losses in exchange for capped gains.
Key takeaways
| Feature | PBIT (as filed) |
|---|---|
| Underlying exposure | BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) |
| Downside protection | Losses limited to roughly the first 10% (before fees) |
| Upside | Capped; cap set by market conditions at each start date |
| How it's built | Buys call options on IBIT and sells higher-priced calls to help cover the cost |
| Structure | Three overlapping tranches with staggered monthly start dates |
| Fee | Not yet disclosed |
| Status | Proposed; not yet effective |
A buffer fund is a bit like insurance. You give up some of Bitcoin's big rallies in return for a cushion if prices fall. If Bitcoin surges, the cap means PBIT holders won't capture all of the gain. If it drops sharply, the protection is limited and depends on the fund's terms.
Buffer ETFs are already popular in the stock market with cautious investors and financial advisers. A Bitcoin version could open the door to people who want exposure but can't stomach 50%+ drawdowns. It also shows BlackRock still betting big on crypto ETFs, even though it currently offers only Bitcoin and Ethereum products.
Bitcoin traded near $81,500 on Oct. 20. Catch up on Bitcoin ETF inflows, JPMorgan's 10-year Bitcoin forecast and Strategy's latest Bitcoin buy.
