Tether and Kazakhstan Explore a Tenge-Linked Stablecoin and Asset Tokenization

By CANDY News Desk · 2026-10-08 · News

Oct. 8 (CandyPulse) — Tether, the company behind the world's largest stablecoin, USDT, has signed an agreement with Kazakhstan's central bank to explore a tenge-linked stablecoin and the tokenization of real-world assets. It's an early, exploratory step, but a notable one for a country that has been steadily building its digital asset rules.

Key takeaways

What the agreement covers

The MoU sets out three areas of work.

AreaWhat's planned
StablecoinReview international issuance models, identify use cases and draft a proposal for a tenge-backed pilot
TokenizationBuild a framework, identify candidate assets, then plan a pilot in Alatau, possibly on Tether's Hadron platform
TrainingWorkshops on stablecoin issuance, reserve management and real-world asset tokenization

What a tenge stablecoin would mean

The tenge is Kazakhstan's national currency. A tenge-linked stablecoin would be a digital token designed to always be worth one tenge, combining the stability of the local currency with the speed of blockchain payments.

That could make it easier to send money, settle payments and trade tokenized assets in the local currency, without first converting into dollars.

What tokenization could unlock

Tokenization means putting real-world assets, such as property, bonds or other financial instruments, on a blockchain as digital tokens. Done well, it can make assets easier to divide, trade and settle.

The planned pilot would take place in Alatau, a city Kazakhstan is developing as a hub for innovation and technology.

Important: this is not a launch

It's worth being clear about what this deal is and isn't. It's a memorandum of understanding: an agreement to study and plan together. There's no commitment to issue a stablecoin, and key details are still open, including:

Kazakhstan's growing crypto rulebook

Kazakhstan has been preparing for moments like this. The National Bank introduced comprehensive digital asset rules on May 1, 2026. Even earlier, in September 2025, it ran its first tenge-denominated stablecoin pilot through its regulatory sandbox, with a token issued by Intebix working with Solana, Mastercard and Eurasian Bank.

What's next

The next milestones to watch are a formal pilot proposal for the tenge stablecoin and the first candidate assets for tokenization in Alatau. If they move forward, Kazakhstan could become one of the first countries to work directly with Tether on a local-currency stablecoin.
