Orca and Loopscale Merge to Become Formation, Uniting Trading, Credit and Vaults

Oct. 8 (CandyPulse) — Two well-known names in Solana DeFi are joining forces. Decentralized exchange Orca and lending protocol Loopscale have merged to form a new company called Formation, bringing trading, credit and vaults together under one roof.

Key takeaways

Who's coming together

Orca is one of Solana's longest-running decentralized exchanges. It has reportedly handled more than $550 billion in trading volume since 2021.

Loopscale is a lending protocol that offers loans and yield vaults. It has reportedly facilitated more than $2 billion in loans.

Put simply, one is great at trading, the other at lending. Formation wants to offer both.

What Formation plans to do

The idea is to cover an asset's whole journey on-chain. A company could issue an asset, raise financing against it and have it traded, all through one connected system.

Formation also has ambitious targets beyond crypto. It says it wants to finance real-world sectors including AI, energy, robotics and defense. Over the next year, it plans to release tools for asset issuers and new investment strategies.

Reports have named partners including Figure and Shinhan Asset Management, with some outlets also listing Superstate, R3 and Securitize.

What it means for ORCA holders

Both teams have confirmed that the existing arrangements for the ORCA and xORCA tokens will continue. The financial terms of the merger haven't been made public.

It's worth noting the ORCA token had already surged nearly 95% between Sept. 30 and Oct. 6, before the merger news broke. A separate Orca governance proposal about reducing automatic buyback rewards is also pending, so holders should keep an eye on both.

Why it matters

DeFi has long been split into separate apps: one for swapping, another for borrowing, another for earning yield. Mergers like this are a sign the industry is consolidating, with teams combining forces to offer fuller services and compete for institutional business.

It also fits a wider trend: bringing real-world assets and financing on-chain, where combined trading and lending tools could be especially useful.

What's next

Watch for Formation's first product launches, details of its partnerships, and any changes to how the ORCA token works. The next year will show whether combining a DEX and a lender can create something bigger than both.
