Oct. 14 (CandyPulse) — Solana is about to get a lot faster at confirming transactions for good. Anza, one of the network's core developers, has set Oct. 21 for the mainnet-beta launch of Alpenglow, one of the biggest upgrades in Solana's history.
The headline goal: cut the time it takes for a transaction to become final from about 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds.
Key takeaways
Every blockchain needs a way for its validators to agree on which transactions are final. On Solana, that job has been done by TowerBFT. Alpenglow swaps it out for Votor, a new system built to reach agreement much faster.
The Solana Foundation points to epoch 1064, starting around 15:00 UTC, as the expected activation window.
| Before Alpenglow | After Alpenglow | |
|---|---|---|
| Consensus system | TowerBFT | Votor |
| Time to finality | About 12.8 seconds | Target of about 150ms |
| Go-live | — | Oct. 21, around 14:50 UTC |
The 150ms target is impressive, but the Solana Foundation is careful about it. It describes the figure as "an expectation, not a constant," measured against the stake distribution at the time of testing. Real-world results could vary.
It is also different from block time, which was already cut from 400ms to 200ms in earlier stages. Block time is about how fast blocks are produced; finality is about how fast they become permanent.
For everyday users, the good news is that nothing breaks. The Foundation says wallets and apps keep working as they do today.
For developers, there is one practical tip: only switch apps to wait for "finalized" status after Alpenglow is live. On TowerBFT, "finalized" still means waiting about 12.8 seconds.
If it works as planned, Alpenglow could make Solana one of the fastest major blockchains to reach finality.
