Nov. 4 (CandyPulse) — The New York Stock Exchange is lining up the plumbing for tokenized stocks. NYSE has added four new partners to its planned tokenized securities venue: Broadridge, Computershare, Equiniti and Superstate.

Why transfer agents matter

A transfer agent keeps the official record of who owns a company's shares. If stocks are going to live on a blockchain, those record-keepers have to be on board, because the token has to match the legal ownership. Getting the firms that handle almost all of the S&P 500 is a big step toward issuer-sponsored tokenized shares, not just wrapped copies.

The planned venue would support both issuer-sponsored tokens and third-party custodial tokens. With Broadridge handling shareholder voting, token holders could keep the rights that come with owning a share.

The race for tokenized stocks

NYSE isn't alone. OKX and ICE filed for a 24/7 tokenized US stock venue, and Nvidia, Nike and more than 50 companies objected to unapproved tokens of their shares. Partner tZERO is also heading to the public markets; see tZERO's $350 million SPAC deal. Banks are moving too, as with Uber's tokenized treasury pilot.
