Oct. 18 (CandyPulse) — The digital dollar is going global. Circle, the company behind the USDC stablecoin, plans to expand into roughly 40 emerging and developing markets, chief executive Jeremy Allaire said.
Speaking to Reuters on Oct. 16 at the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, Allaire named the regions in focus: Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
Key takeaways
In many developing economies, people deal with fast-falling local currencies, expensive transfers and limited access to dollars. A stablecoin like USDC offers a digital dollar that can move across borders in minutes.
Circle's push is aimed at international payments and access to digital dollars, not just crypto trading. That reflects a wider shift: stablecoins are becoming tools for everyday money. We explored this in The Quiet Power of Stablecoins.
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Target markets | About 40 |
| USDC circulation (Q2) | About $73.3 billion, up 19% |
| Stablecoin market share | Circle ~25%, Tether ~60% |
| Country list | Not yet published |
| Rollout dates | Not yet published |
This is a statement of intent. Allaire named regions, not countries, and Circle has not shared a rollout schedule. Each country has its own licensing and reserve rules, so the pace will depend on local approval.
Reports also differ on Circle's planned purchase of Singapore payments firm Tazapay, so that detail is unsettled.
As digital dollars spread, payment ecosystems that let people actually spend crypto become more important. Products such as Cardaxo, which lets users spend crypto in daily life, are built for exactly that world.
