Aztec Labs Relaunches zk.money: Bringing On-Chain Privacy Back to Ethereum Layer 2

By CANDY Team · 2026-09-30 · News

Aztec Labs announced the return of zk.money, resurrecting its flagship zero-knowledge privacy wallet as an alpha release on the newly architected Aztec Network.

The launch marks the return of a protocol that processed over $100 million in volume across 75,000 wallets before it was deprecated in 2023. Re-engineered from the ground up, the new zk.money aims to eliminate the public surveillance inherent to Ethereum transactions by default, introducing self-custodial, confidential stablecoin payments to everyday Web3 users.

1. Core Features & Privacy Architecture

Unlike standard Layer 1 or EVM-compatible Layer 2 transactions, where wallet balances, counterparties, and transfer values are broadcast publicly on block explorers, zk.money enforces client-side zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs).

Operating natively on Aztec’s privacy-centric Layer 2 network, the protocol records transactions as encrypted cryptographic commitments. For peer-to-peer transfers, three fundamental metrics remain concealed from observers:

"On-chain transactions between two individuals shouldn't mean publishing your financial history to the world," stated Joe Andrews, CEO of Aztec Labs.

2. Alpha Stage Guardrails and System Caps

To manage smart contract risk and test cryptographic efficiency under real conditions, Aztec Labs has rolled out the alpha version with conservative transaction limits:

The team noted that these ceilings will scale gradually as stress-testing of the underlying proving system advances.

3. User Experience: ENS Handles and Payment Links

Recognizing that previous privacy tools suffered from cumbersome workflows, the rebooted zk.money replaces 42-character hexadecimal addresses with consumer-facing rails:

4. Self-Custody and Security Positioning

A key design pillar emphasized by Aztec Labs is absolute self-custody. The protocol’s smart contracts have eliminated privileged admin keys, preventing backdoors, centralized account freezes, or unilateral fund seizures by Aztec Labs.

The contracts operate immutably; only the holder of the underlying private viewing keys and spending credentials can authorize outflows or decrypt transaction history.

5. Industry Impact & Regulatory Outlook

The relaunch arrives at a pivotal moment for on-chain privacy. Following years of heightened global regulatory crackdowns on mixing protocols, zk.money’s framework seeks to draw a clear line between permissionless mixers and compliance-compatible, self-custodial privacy infrastructure.

By limiting early transaction sizes and centering the application on day-to-day peer-to-peer and commerce payments, Aztec is positioning zk.money as essential financial infrastructure for standard Web3 interactions, setting a potential precedent for how private transactions integrate with the broader Ethereum ecosystem.
