Zano Rolls Back a Month of Its Blockchain in Emergency Recovery

By CANDY News Desk · 2026-09-30 · News

Sept. 30 (CandyPulse) — In one of the most drastic steps a blockchain can take, Zano has rewound its entire transaction history by about a month. The privacy-focused network restarted from an earlier point after discovering a flaw that let unauthorized ZANO and fUSD tokens into circulation.

Key takeaways

What went wrong

Zano's core team found a serious problem with Gateway Addresses, a feature switched on by Hard Fork 6 in August. The flaw allowed tokens to enter circulation that should never have existed.

To remove them, the team chose to restart the chain from block 3,833,000, the last block before Hard Fork 6 went live. Everything after that point is gone from the recovered chain.

What it means for users

Any transaction confirmed during the affected month no longer exists on the recovered blockchain. That includes ordinary payments and trades, reportedly more than 109,000 of them.

Zano says it plans to reimburse affected users using development funds, team holdings and contributions from large holders, without minting new ZANO. But it has not yet published who qualifies, how much will be paid or when.

What node operators must do

Zano released emergency software, version 2.2.3.600. Miners, stakers, node operators and exchanges all need to install it to follow the recovered chain. Anyone who doesn't could end up on an incompatible version of the network.

Why it matters

Blockchains are supposed to be immutable: once something is recorded, it stays. A month-long rollback is extremely rare and controversial, because it shows that history can be rewritten when a flaw is serious enough. Supporters say it was the only way to remove the unauthorized tokens; critics say it undermines trust in any transaction's finality.

What's next

The key thing to watch is Zano's claims process. If you transacted on Zano during the affected month, follow official Zano channels only, and be very wary of anyone offering to "help" you claim a refund. Recovery announcements are a favourite target for scammers.
