Vitalik Buterin Envisions Ethereum as AI Settlement Layer

Vitalik Buterin has recently unveiled a new research proposal that shifts the focus away from a commonly debated topic: the ability of blockchains to execute AI models. Instead, his proposal positions Ethereum as a privacy-oriented settlement layer tailored for the management of AI and API usage.

In collaboration with Davide Crapis, the report shared on Ethereum Research emphasizes that the true potential lies not in implementing large language models (LLMs) directly on the blockchain. Rather, it suggests that Ethereum could play a vital role in securing transactions related to metered AI services.

While the proposal opens up exciting possibilities for the integration of AI within blockchain frameworks, it also raises concerns regarding potential privacy vulnerabilities. If these issues are not adequately addressed, they could undermine the very foundation that the settlement layer seeks to establish.
