German Banks Bring Crypto to Your App: Sparkassen Starts Phased Rollout Through DekaBank

By · 2026-10-20 · News

Oct. 20 (CandyPulse) — Crypto is arriving in one of Germany's most familiar banking apps. The Sparkassen, the country's network of savings banks, began a phased rollout of crypto trading on Oct. 19, run through DekaBank. Eligible customers can now buy and sell crypto right inside the Sparkasse app.

Key takeaways

How it works

The crypto option sits in the investment section of the Sparkasse app. DekaBank runs the service and holds customers' coins, with Börse Stuttgart involved in custody.

A gradual rollout

There's no single launch day for everyone. Each regional savings bank chooses when to turn the service on. The savings-bank association, DSGV, expects roughly 30 to 40 more banks each month, with a large share connected by around mid-2027.

Why it matters

The Sparkassen serve tens of millions of Germans, many of whom have never opened a crypto exchange account. Putting crypto inside an app they already trust could bring a whole new group of people into the market. It also comes days after Deutsche Bank launched Bitcoin and Ether custody in Germany, showing how fast European banks are moving.

The trade-offs

Convenience comes with limits. Customers can't withdraw coins to a personal hardware wallet, and Sparkassen warn about sharp price swings and the risk of losing the whole investment. If self-custody matters to you, read your crypto wallet is public: what strangers can learn.

What's next

Expect more savings banks to switch on crypto month by month into 2027. For more on banks embracing crypto, see JPM Coin arriving on Ethereum and South Korea's Jeonbuk Bank launching Bitcoin-backed loans.
