RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 1 (CandyPulse) — One of the world's largest oil companies is testing a blockchain to prove its greener fuels are what they claim to be. Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled energy giant, is trialling the Cardano blockchain in two research projects to track the environmental claims behind sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, the Cardano Foundation announced.
Key takeaways
The projects come out of a research partnership between Petrobras, the Swiss non-profit Cardano Foundation and Rio de Janeiro's Pontifical Catholic University (PUC-Rio).
The aviation project centres on a platform called CS-SAF, built with PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs. It turns each unit of sustainable aviation fuel's environmental benefit into a standardised token on Cardano, with data aligned to CORSIA, the international scheme for cutting airline emissions.
It uses a "book-and-claim" model. That means the green benefit of a quantity of cleaner fuel can be assigned to a buyer, like an airline, separately from the physical fuel itself. The blockchain keeps a clear record of who has claimed each benefit, so the same emissions cut can't be sold twice.
The diesel project records information at every stage: production, transport and use. Linked together, those records create a history of the fuel's journey, making it easier to verify claims about how green it really is.
Green fuel claims are only valuable if buyers can trust them. Double counting, where the same environmental benefit is claimed by more than one party, is one of the biggest problems in carbon markets. A shared, tamper-resistant record is a natural fit for that problem.
For Cardano, a pilot with a company of Petrobras's size is a notable real-world endorsement, and a reminder that blockchains are being tested for far more than trading.
These are research projects, not commercial launches. Petrobras hasn't set timelines or volumes, and there's no guarantee the systems will move beyond testing. Big companies often run blockchain pilots that never scale.
Watch for results from the research phase and any decision by Petrobras to use the systems with real customers, such as airlines buying sustainable aviation fuel.
