Oct. 16 (CandyPulse) — Ledger wants your crypto wallet to look a lot more like the phone in your pocket. The hardware wallet maker has unveiled Atom, an Android-based, smartphone-style device planned for mid-2027.
It is a bold move, and it comes at a sensitive time. Ledger is still dealing with the fallout from a recent supply-chain incident involving tampered devices sold through a reseller, which we covered earlier this week.
Key takeaways
Atom is designed to do two jobs. On one side, it runs familiar apps, with reports naming WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok. On the other, it has a separate protected mode where crypto is stored and signed. Reports also say it integrates an AI assistant called OpenClaw.
Ledger is careful about the label, though. Its own product page says Atom is not a smartphone. It is a data-only mobile device that does not support cellular voice calls or SMS.
| Feature | What we know |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Android-based |
| Everyday apps | Runs apps alongside a protected crypto mode |
| Calls and SMS | Not supported (data-only) |
| Security chip | Secure element, CC EAL6+ |
| Tamper protection | Designed to block screen-reader-style implants |
| Shipping | Planned for summer 2027 |
| Where to buy | Initially only through Ledger's own website |
| Price | Founders Edition reported at $849; some outlets cite $899 |
Atom arrives just after a supply-chain incident shook confidence in hardware wallets. On-chain researchers have estimated losses of up to $93.2 million across more than 300 wallets.
Ledger says Atom's tamper protections would have blocked the kind of screen-reader implants involved in that incident. That is a strong claim, and one that will need real-world testing to prove.
Coverage so far is based on the announcement. No independent testing has been reported yet, and the device will not face real-world use before its summer 2027 launch. Reports also differ on the price, with figures of $849 and $899 both cited.
If it delivers, Atom could change how people carry and protect their crypto. Until then, the safest advice stays the same: buy hardware wallets only from official sources.
