FinCEN Moves to Cut MEXC Off From the U.S. Financial System Over $16 Billion in Alleged Illicit Flows

By · 2026-11-07 · News

Nov. 7 (CandyPulse) — The U.S. has taken one of its toughest steps yet against a crypto exchange. FinCEN, the Treasury's financial crimes unit, issued an order on Nov. 6 that will cut MEXC Global off from the U.S. financial system.

What it means in practice

U.S. banks and payment firms won't be able to move money to or from MEXC once the order is in force. Treasury described the move as part of Operation Economic Outcast. It's an unusual step: rather than sanctioning the exchange outright, it shuts the door to U.S. dollar rails.

FinCEN's findings are allegations, not a court verdict. MEXC can still operate outside the U.S. financial system, and the order doesn't touch the crypto users hold on the exchange. But losing access to U.S. banks and partners usually makes it much harder for an exchange to work with mainstream firms.

A wider crackdown

Authorities around the world are tightening the screws on platforms accused of helping sanctions evasion. Japan recently added Garantex to its sanctions list, and the SEC has proposed new crypto custody rules.

What's next

Watch for the order's publication in the Federal Register, which starts the 30-day clock, and for MEXC's response. If you use MEXC, keep an eye on official notices about deposits and withdrawals. More on our Regulation page.
