ECB's Pontes System Goes Live, Linking Tokenized Assets to Central Bank Money

By CANDY Team · 2026-09-23 · News

The European Central Bank has launched Pontes, a new Eurosystem platform that lets tokenized financial transactions settle using central bank money rather than commercial bank funds or private stablecoins. The go-live date was set for September 21, 2026, following Governing Council approval of the broader strategy back in 2025.

Pontes acts as a bridge between distributed ledger technology (DLT) platforms used by banks and market infrastructure firms and the ECB's existing TARGET settlement services. In practice, participants fund "Dedicated Cash Wallets" from their TARGET accounts and use them to settle the cash side of tokenized-asset trades directly in central bank money — the same risk-free settlement asset that already underpins Europe's interbank system.

An initial group of operators has already signed on, including Clearstream, SWIAT, Cashlink, and Axiology, with more expected to join as registration completes. Speaking at a Bundesbank symposium, ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone said tokenized assets will sit "at the center of a new digital finance ecosystem," and that tokenization has the potential to reorganize the entire financial value chain — while flagging risks around fragmentation and loss of the "monetary anchor" if private settlement assets become dominant instead.

Pontes is the near-term track of a two-part ECB strategy; a longer-term platform called Appia is being developed in parallel to build a more deeply integrated tokenized-market infrastructure, targeted for further rollout by 2028, including expanded operating hours and eventual 24/7 settlement.

Why it matters: This is one of the clearest signals yet that a G7 central bank wants to keep central bank money at the core of tokenized markets before private stablecoins become the default settlement layer for institutional DeFi and tokenized securities in Europe.
