Nov. 2 (CandyPulse) — In China, crypto is now officially on the anti-corruption radar. A new resolution from the Chinese Communist Party, adopted at its Fifth Plenum (Oct. 26–29) and published by Xinhua on Nov. 1, directs investigators to go after officials who use digital assets to receive bribes or hide illicit wealth.
Key takeaways
| Area | What it says |
|---|---|
| Channels targeted | Virtual currencies, blockchain, online transactions, cross-border capital |
| Tools | Tracing digital assets; reviewing wealth via public blockchains |
| People targeted | Officials, and "white gloves" acting for them |
| Red flag | Family wealth substantially above income |
| International | Cooperation to pursue fugitives and recover assets |
| New penalties? | None outlined |
Crypto can move value quietly and across borders, which makes it attractive for hiding bribes. But public blockchains also leave a permanent trail. China's directive aims to use that transparency against corrupt officials. A high-profile example is former senior financial official Yao Qian, under investigation since April 2024, whose crypto bribes were valued by local media at about 68.3 million yuan ($9.8 million) at Ethereum's peak.
China still bans crypto trading and related financial services for the public. A February notice from eight agencies had already widened the ban to stablecoins and asset tokenization. This directive is about enforcement against officials, not a policy shift for crypto markets.
