Coinbase Wins CFTC Approval to Run Its Own Derivatives Clearinghouse

By CANDY News Desk · 2026-09-29 · News

Coinbase has cleared another regulatory hurdle, and this one completes a big piece of its business. The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has approved Coinbase Clearing to operate as a derivatives clearing organization (DCO), The Block reported.

In plain terms, Coinbase can now do something it previously relied on others for: clearing and settling its own derivatives trades.

What is a clearinghouse?

When two people trade a futures contract, there's always a risk that one side won't pay up. A clearinghouse sits in the middle of every trade to remove that risk. It collects collateral, tracks positions and makes sure both sides get what they're owed.

It's one of the least glamorous parts of finance, but also one of the most important. Without it, derivatives markets don't work.

What the approval covers

The approval has clear limits:

Coinbase applied for DCO registration in November 2025, and the CFTC lists the registration as effective from September 28.

The USDC angle

One detail stands out. Coinbase Clearing is set to be the first clearinghouse to use USDC as a native collateral asset. Because stablecoins move around the clock, that opens the door to 24/7 settlement, something traditional markets, which close on weekends and holidays, can't easily offer.

Why it matters

With this approval, Coinbase can now list, broker and clear fully collateralized products all in-house. That gives it more control over costs, speed and the products it can offer.

It's also another sign of US regulators gradually making room for crypto firms inside the traditional financial system, even as Congress struggles to pass broader crypto laws.

The bottom line

Coinbase now owns the full chain for fully collateralized derivatives, from listing to clearing, and it's using a stablecoin to do it around the clock. For traders, that could mean faster settlement and new products over time.
