It's tempting to file "AI plus crypto" under this cycle's list of narratives — a hot theme that runs for a few months and fades. That framing undersells what's actually happening.
Think about the two forces involved. AI is reshaping how software thinks and acts, moving from tools humans operate to agents that operate on their own. Crypto is reshaping how value moves, making money programmable and permissionless. Now put them together. You get software that can not only make decisions, but hold and move money to act on them, autonomously, around the clock.
That's not a narrative. That's a new category of thing that couldn't exist before either piece matured.
An AI agent with a crypto wallet can research, negotiate, hire other agents, pay for services, and complete tasks without a human in the loop. Marketplaces for exactly this are already appearing, where agents advertise skills and settle payments on-chain. The CandyChain AI Agent Marketplace is one working example, with a transparent split between the agent's owner, the agent, and the platform.
The requirement underneath all of it is infrastructure that can handle machine-speed activity cheaply. Agents don't transact like humans — they act constantly, in high volume. Chains built for scale and low fees are the ones positioned to carry this.
Trends come and go. Structural shifts rewire the whole board. This one looks a lot more like the second kind.
