A fresh cluster of ancient Bitcoin wallets stirred in mid-to-late August, drawing close attention from on-chain analysts. According to CoinDesk and Decrypt, citing Galaxy Research data, six wallets last active between 2011 and 2014 moved a combined 553.59 BTC — worth roughly $40 million — between August 16 and August 26. One address moved 212 BTC that had sat untouched since August 2012, representing an estimated cost basis near $12 per coin, while a 40 BTC wallet last held in May 2012 was routed to German custody provider Boerse Stuttgart Digital, according to Decrypt. Crucially, CoinDesk noted that five of the six wallets sent coins to addresses with no known exchange links, meaning confirmed selling cannot be established from the blockchain data alone. The episode comes against a broader backdrop of slowing dormant-coin activity: PYMNTS, citing Galaxy Digital head of research Alex Thorn, reported that the second quarter of 2026 saw on-chain movement of dormant Bitcoin fall to its lowest level since the third quarter of 2022, with 2026 on pace to see less than half as much dormant Bitcoin move as in 2025. Galaxy has characterized 2024 and 2025 as a 'great distribution' period rivaling the 2017 bull market in old-holder coin movement.
