For years, the knock on Ethereum was simple: it's too slow and too expensive. And for years, it was a fair complaint. Fees would spike into the absurd, transactions would crawl, and every new competitor promised to be the 'Ethereum killer.'
But a funny thing happened. Instead of trying to win the speed race head-on, Ethereum leaned into a different role entirely — becoming the trusted settlement layer while an ecosystem of Layer-2s handles the fast, cheap activity on top.
It's a bit like a financial system. You don't settle every coffee purchase directly at the central bank; you use faster rails that periodically settle down to the secure base. Ethereum is positioning itself as that secure base, and the Layer-2s as the everyday rails.
This is why 'boring' might be winning. Ethereum still has the deepest developer community, the most tooling, the most credibility, and the most value secured. Those things don't move just because a rival posts higher throughput numbers. Network effects are stubborn — and stubborn is exactly what you want in a settlement layer.
The risk is real: Layer-2 fragmentation, competition from fast monolithic chains, and the constant pressure to keep fees reasonable. Ethereum's lead is not guaranteed. But the strategy is coherent in a way a lot of 'faster' chains aren't. Security first, scale on top.
Sometimes the tortoise knows exactly what it's doing. Not financial advice — do your own research.
