Behind the Blog: Breach Rumors and Fun With Maps

This is Behind the Blog, where we share our behind-the-scenes thoughts about how a few of our top stories of the week came together. This week, we discuss a tech near-catastrophe, data journalism, and breach rumors.

SAM: In the spirit of transparency and knowledge-sharing, I think it’s important for us to document every time one of us has a technological near-catastrophe and DIY repairs our way out of it. This week it was my turn: I tripped over my own two idiot feet and sloshed a cup of coffee (with a lot of very sugary Coffee Mate) across my desk, including all over my new keyboard, which I just recently bragged about in this venue. This happened at 9 a.m. on a day I had a lot to do first thing in the morning, conveniently.

Writing about this here feels like copying Emanuel, who had a near identical experience earlier this year: buying a new Keychron keyboard, being extremely pleased and proud of it, and then spilling coffee into it just a few weeks later. I bought mine last month from Micro Center, open-box and basically unused from what I could tell, a rare steal. It cost me $160 (usually this model is $240) so I was not down to just let it perish and buy a new one. Plus, there’s the blow to my computer mana that giving up would deal me. Not an option.
